Typical Application Areas and Cameras

Cameras have been employed in the inspection of electrical components for decades. Even when the production cycle is sped up, the components in use are becoming increasingly compact. Circuits with several electronic components can be found inside any electronic device, such as a computer, cell phone, or television. Camera systems must be used to inspect these during and after manufacture. Semiconductor wafers are used to make the active components. Year after year, the density and complexity of structures found on a single wafer increases. The demands for quality control, and hence the burden placed on camera systems, continue to rise.

Basler cameras are ideally suited to a wide range of applications in the electronics industry.

Among their strengths are:

  • Sensors of exceptional quality
  • Frame rates are high.
  • High-resolution images
  • Excellent price/performance ratio High speed
  • Cable lengths of up to 100 meters are available.

Inspection of printed circuit boards (PCBs) using automated optical inspection (AOI).

Control of the geometry of the PCB and its components (presence/absence, position offset, heights (tombstoning effect), skew/ tilt), paste and solder inspection, control of the right components (correct item, correct polarity, damages), and checking for dirt/irregular items are all areas where cameras are used in Automated Optical Inspection. Pre-process (raw PCB inspection), post-paste, pre-reflow soldering, and post-reflow soldering inspections are all possible (final inspection).
